At each end of this lovely silk scarf is a gathering of botanical prints, textures and rich colours which remind me of the African landscape I grew up in. Against the deep teal green and dark turquoise background are golden cotinus leaves which look like sunsets playing amongst the delicate details of the rust brown coreopsis flowers and leaves. The cotton thread used for binding has left delicate contrasting lines which add to the beautiful landscape illusion.
The vesica piscis shapes have been created using 'itajime' shibori to resist the dye. They are lighter against the rich blue green background, sometimes holding little botanical details within their spheres. As the light plays over this luxurious silk the colours reflect back in changing nuances of sea green, teal, dark turquoise blues and a variety of golds.
Eco-printing, or contact printing is a method of using plant materials like leaves and petals to print themselves on fabric using their own dyes. The result is is a beautiful reflection of local flavoured plant shapes and colours. Because fresh plant material is mostly used for this technique surface design artists who work with this method produce fabrics which reflect the unique environment they live in.
